Moved to new server hardware
by Nick Smith 31st August 2008Over the last 3 months we've been hard at work moving all our web customers from our own server hardware (owned & managed by Climbers.net) to new, more powerful hardware owned & managed by a dedicated web hosting company, Rackspace.
We've hosted web sites on our own hardware for the last 9 years, which has meant being available 24/7, 365 days a year in case there is a problem. It's great to have found a hosting partner we can trust, who will make sure the hardware gets fixed if something goes wrong at 4am on a Sunday morning!
We followed a plan of phased transfers of website, email and DNS services over to the new server during July, and kept the old server in place for an extra month, in order to redirect users whose machines were pointing to the old server address. Our main server, the trusty curbar.climbers.net was finally switched off on 31st August 2008, after 6 years of 24/7 running and having serving over 1 billion hits!
The move has brought cost savings to our customers, as well as freeing up more of our time so we can concentrate on web design, not web hosting & server maintenance.
