Great run in the wind & rain!
by Nick Smith 4th December 2008I was dragged out this morning in the freezing cold and driving rain to Firbeck village, just North of Worksop. My running partner, Alicia, has been running sections of the Rowbotham's Round Rotherham International Trail Event in preparation for running this 50 mile race in a couple of weeks time. The navigation is pretty tricky, and unlike the short 5 or 10km races that I've done, you don't get much in the way of signs or marshals out on a 50 mile course!!
This morning we ran from Firbeck village towards the finish. Unlike the section we ran in Rotherham last week, which was a) urban, b) smelly and c) generally unpleasant!, this section of the course was lovely
Muddy trails across fields and through woods that were easy on my knees and very scenic. We even spotted some limestone that looked climable next to Roche Abbey!
I tried running in my Haglof Oz jacket for the first time, and I was amazed how well it performed. Even in driving rain, running into a headwind, it did a perfect job of keeping out the elements. The draw-cords on the waist and hood make for a snug fit so it doesn't move around too much while you are running. I originally bought the jacket as a lightweight shell for rock climbing and Summer Alpine mountaineering, but it is light enough that it makes a great jacket for Winter running.
Alicia completed the 24km section (naturally), but I turned around at 7.5km and ran back to the car. Still, at 14.2km, it was by far my longest run in 18 months, and my ITB's didn't give me any problems either
Very pleased.
Obviously I'm not going to be entering the 50 mile race with Alicia. Well, not this year anyway...
