Broken and Lost!

by Nick Smith 18th August 2008

Cracked LCD I haven't had much luck with my camera gear this Summer :(

First up was my Canon 5D SLR. After a very successful photo shoot of Ray's Roof in Staffordshire, I returned home and found that somehow the LCD on the back of the camera had become smashed! It went into my rucksack in one piece, so something must have pressed very firmly into the side of the rucksack to damage it - perhaps on the car journey home.

It took the Canon RCC a couple of weeks to make the repair, which cost around £130. They did an excellent job, and the camera looks good as new, but their communication leaves something to be desired - regular emails about the status of the repair would be nice, and I couldn't get their online repair tracking system to work at all.

Last week I was out in Chamonix, photographing up in the mountains. I was getting some excellent shots with my Canon SD870 IS compact digital, when I stumbled moving on ice on the South East ridge of the Tour Ronde. The camera flew out of my hand and down the side of the mountain! It was frustrating to lose the camera, but I was mostly annoyed that I hadn't bothered to download the photos from the previous day onto my laptop, so I lost those as well :(

So the lessons learnt for next time: keep the compact camera attached to my mountaineering harness at all times, and religiously download the memory card every single night! I did really like that model of compact camera, so I'll probably be buying an identical one once the insurance pays up.
